Zur Situation des Deutschen an einer Hochschule des Dialekt-Territoriums Moselle

Abstract : The present contribution examines the question as to why in spite of a basically advantageous environment, numbers of German students are reclining. Five different phenomena, basically favourable to the choice of German as a foreign language, are being examined: numbers of dialect speakers in the Moselle territory, the dialectal influence on French spoken in this area, the proximity of Germany, and language teaching methods employed at university. In particular, however, the article examines the result of a survey among Metz’ students of German which reveals that only an extremely limited number choose German because they consider themselves as dialect speakers, the active knowledge of Franconian dialects being generally on the decline. If language competence is thus at the origin of a choice of German it is rather related to the fact that the students concerned consider themselves as bilingual French and German speakers.
