In writing his epistolary at the turn of the 16th-17th centuries, Paolo Sarpi was more concerned with the dissemination of knowledge and new ideas than talking about himself. One of the techniques of persuasion he uses is anecdote. This paper/article seeks first to identify the precise nature of the unpublished little tale (an ekdotos = 'unpublished'), which is of a historical and deliberately polemical nature; then to discover its role/use within the text in which it is embedded and, more generally, within the works and thinking of Sarpi.
