La Musique sans musique : Mallarmé, Valéry

Abstract : Mallarmé's and Valéry's ideal Music is silent. As a process of abstraction, it is a model for literature. This formal Music is the result of a transition from aural to visual perceptions then to calculation. As such, it is the architectonic law of the poem but it more or less completely rules the phonic dimension out.
