The study of the animal is a topic that amateurs and a few professional historians have been examining for many years. However, the startind point of formal studies dates back as recently as the 1980s. The article traces the landmarks in the study of animal, analyses the caracteristics and developpement of production, and discusses the exchanges history has to maintain in this subject area with the humanities.

L'histoire de l'animal est pratiquée depuis longtemps par des amateurs et quelques historiens professionnels, mais la constitution réelle de ce chantier ne date que des années 1980. L'article retrace les étapes de cette histoire, analyse les caractéristiques et l'évolution de la production, fait le point sur le dialogue que l'histoire doit entretenir en ce domaine avec les autres sciences humaines.
