Italian images of Romanian female immigrants
Résumé
In the Italian collective perception (illustrated by the Italian media), the Other, the stranger who has just arrived and who takes the jobs of the Italians, is usually represented as a man. A man feared either because of his outlook or of his acts (usually rapes, killings and other criminal acts are the best way of ‘selling' information). The Other, as presented in the Italian media has virile characteristics – force (brute), power (usually of the fist). Romanians have become the largest minority in Italy and the Romanian immigration has transformed itself from a short-term economic migration into a medium - if not long - term immigration. The difference in between the number of Romanian men and Romanian women that immigrated in Italy is almost insignificant. Yet more than two thirds of the media attention in Italy is focused on the Romanian male immigrants. My paper will look for and analyze the representations/images of the Romanian women who immigrated in Italy. Is there a simple dichotomy in between the Romanian sex-slaves of the late ‘90s and the successful women managers who happen to have their origins in the same part of the world? Are there only broken images? Is the representation stereotyped or is the reading key wrong? Can we only talk about glimpses or broken lenses?
