Diotogène, Sur la royauté Commentaire historique et politique pour un essai de datation

Abstract : Of the three preserved neopythagorean treatises On Kingship, that of Diotogenes is probably the one that best allows an exploration of the problematic question of dating. The present historical commentary first outlines Diotogenes’ definition of the “good king” and his qualities. It then gathers the main clues converging towards a dating at the end of the Hellenistic period or at the beginning of the Principate (1st century BCE-1st century CE). It does so by examining the echoes with the political language of the Hellenistic kingship and by attempting to locate certain great political virtues in the evolution of monarchical ideology.
